The White Stripes

Les White Stripes est un groupe rock minimaliste de Detroit, formé en 1997. S'affichant comment frère et sœur (mais laissant des doutes planer quant à une éventuelle liaison, il ne sont pas frère et sœurs : « White » est un pseudonyme...), le guitariste et chanteur Jack White et Meg White (batterie), ont sorti un album éponyme en 1999 puis De Stijl en 2000. Leur son « garage rock » les a rendu très populaire en 2002, suite a l'album White Blood Cells et l'hymne « Fell in Love with a Girl ». Enfin, ils ont sortis Elephant en 2003, ce dernier album a été salué par le public et la critique saluant un heureux retour aux sources du rock, et leur capacité unique à faire de deux personnes un groupe.

Les rythmes de batterie extrêmements basiques de Meg accompagnent un Jack White surdoué de la guitare jouant sur des modèles bien moins chers et bien moins évolués que ceux habituellements utilisés par les rock-stars.

Les White Stripes jouent sur 3 couleurs : le rouge, le noir et le blanc. Leurs pochettes de CD, leurs vetêments, leurs instruments sont tous de cette couleur.

En février 2004 la chanson Seven Nation Army a remporté un Grammy pour la meilleure chanson rock. L'album Elephant a lui remporté le prix du meilleur album alternatif.

On notera leur apparition dans le film Coffee and Cigarettes de Jim Jarmusch en 2004.
